Kazakhstan puts military units on alert

Kazakhstan has put all its military units and armed forces institutions on alert, the country’s Defense Ministry reported on Monday (July 18).

“Due to the introduction of the red terror alert in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s military units and armed forces institutions have been put on alert,” the ministry said, adding that “security has been tightened at the storehouses for weapons and ammunition.”

Kazakhstan’s Interior Ministry reports three police officers and one civilian were killed in an armed attack of unidentified persons in Almaty.

“Three police officers in Almaty have died from sustained injuries,” the ministry said. One of the attackers attempted to capture a car belonging to a city resident, “as a result of which the driver was injured and later died,” the interior ministry added.

“On July 18, at around 11am (8am Moscow time), a police officer sustained a gunshot wound when unidentified persons tried to break into the interior ministry’s department in Almaty’s Almalinsky district. After this, the perpetrator took the police officer’s automatic weapons and fled. The perpetrator used the weapons against ‘Buran’ police officers that chased him, as a result of which two members of patrol crew sustained gunshot wounds,” the ministry noted.

“The suspect was later identified. He was injured and detained by police,” the ministry said adding that “two police officers sustained gunshot wounds when detaining him.”
